The combination of the X Window System and a secure shell (SSH) program means that you can run an application on one of the CAE network's Unix or Linux workstations without leaving your office. OS X 10.4 (Tiger) includes all the necessary software on your installation DVD. OS X 10.3 (Panther) users will need a free download of the X Window System from Apple. If you use OS X 10.2 or earlier, you'll need to upgrade to have an easy way of running X Window System applications.
If you have OS X 10.4, look in your Utilities folder for an X11 icon as shown below. Jquery for mac. If the X11 icon is not installed, see article 301229 in the Apple support site for instructions on how to install X11 from your operating system DVD. In particular, read the section titled 'More custom reinstallation options with Mac OS X 10.4'. If you have OS X 10.3, download and install X11 from Apple's website.
Once you've verified that X11 is installed, double-click its icon in the Utilities folder. After X11 has started, you should see an xterm window on your screen as shown below.

At your xterm's $ prompt, use the ssh command to log into one of the CAE network's Unix or Linux systems (click here for a list of those systems). The form of the ssh command is
where username is your CAE username and hostname is the name of the Unix or Linux system you want to log into. The first time you try to connect to one of the CAE systems, you'll be prompted about an unrecgonized RSA key. This prompt should only happen once per CAE system, and if it happens more than once, one of the following things has happened:
- You've completely reinstalled your Mac or your home directory on your Mac, causing it to lose its record of the remote system's host key.
- The remote system has been reinstalled. To check on this possibility, contact Joel Seber (CH301, x3734) or Mike Renfro (CH314, x3601). The likelihood of a complete system reinstall on a CAE system is pretty low, however.
If you've verified that neither your Mac nor the CAE system has been reinstalled, STOP NOW and contact Mike Renfro or Joel Seber. There is a chance that a router or other system between your Mac and the CAE lab has been broken into, and opens up the possibility that your password or other information could be intercepted.
Enter your CAE network password when prompted. If you typed it correctly, you should be logged into the remote system, and should see the remote system's $ prompt. Once you see the remote system's $ prompt, you can run most graphical applications by typing their command. For example, ANSYS 10.0 is run by typing launcher100 and pressing the Return key:
Introduction
ANSYS is a general purpose finite element program for engineering analysis. It can solve a wide range of structural, electromagnetic and heat transfer problems, computing the values of displacements, forces, stresses, strains, temperatures and magnetic fields. Analysis types available are: static, eigenvalue buckling, mode frequency, harmonic response, linear/nonlinear transient dynamics, heat transfer, magnetics and substructures. Structural and heat transfer analysis may be in one, two or three dimensions.
ITS’s installation is an educational version, so there is a limit on the size of the problem which may be solved, based upon the wavefront of the stiffness matrix for the problem.

Eligibility
ANSYS is for use by all UVa faculty, staff, and students, on computers connected to the UVa network. Off-Grounds users must use the UVa Anywhere VPN client to connect to the UVa network. Students may also access this program in computers within the libraries.
ANSYS is for use by all UVa faculty, staff, and students, on computers connected to the UVa network. Please see the UVaSoftware website for restrictions and licensing requirements.
Availability
Spring 2019: The current version of ANSYS for Windows and Linux is Version 19.0.
Licensing
There are different types of licenses and usage for ANSYS license. Please consult this ANSYS document to determine which type of license to use when you open ANSYS.
Windows
For Windows computers, ANSYS registration and licensing information is available from the UVa Software Gateway. The ANSYS Windows USB drive for 32-bit or 64-bit machines may be borrowed from Research Data Services in Brown Science & Engineering Library Room I043. ANSYS is also available on Linux platforms, and in public labs.
Installation Instructions
With the new Tab design, you can easily get access to all functions, and the smart search will show relevant information from the Web into Word in a direct way. You may also likeThe most popular MS Word enables users to create, edit, review and share the documents. Excel for apple mac.
- You will find the license manager servers at UVa for the ANSYS software install on the same page that you download the software from.
- In Windows, first be sure you are able to view file extensions. In Windows 10, you can ensure this capability by selecting Control Panel from the Windows menu, choosing Folder Options, then under View deselecting Hide file extensions.
- Unzip the folder and then unzip ELECTRONICS_191_WINX64.zip
- Next run setup.exe, which can be found in the ELECTRONICS_191_WINX64 folder. Again, make sure that you “Run as Administrator”.
- Follow the instructions using defaults and if unsure about a feature, choose to configure later.
- Next will come a screen with a selection of 1 or 3 license servers. Select 3 license servers.
- When the screen with three blank text-entry fields appears, use the port number and names of the servers as found on your order receipt.
- After completing the licensing, the initial splash screen returns. The installation is now complete and you may select Exit and then Finish.
Linux Installation
The three .iso files can be downloaded from UVa Software and mounted for install. Ansys installation on any version of Ubuntu is officially not supported by Ansys. Installation on Red Hat and SUSE Enterprise versions are supported by Ansys. Since ITS only supports Ubuntu 64-bit Linux installations, and we align our support with ITS support, we do not offer support for Ansys installation on Linux.
